Are you supposed to paint the walls then the trim, or the trim then the walls?? I want to freshen up the crown and door frame in the living room with a coat of paint, but I don't know if I should do it first or last. I see pros and cons to doing it each way.

I'm hoping to get the painting done this weekend.

When I painted our basement, I did the walls first then the trim. I used the reasoning that I'd probably drip paint and since the drips run down, it would run from the walls to the baseboard. So if I painted the walls first and the drips ran down, I could easily wipe them not worry too much as I'd be painting over any stains when I did the baseboards. Make sense? Anyway, that was my theory and it worked ok.

Among other things, my brother is a professional painter - he says first coat trim, first coat walls, second coat trim, second coat walls... in that order. The reason is that the walls are easier to cut, and when you finish with the walls you get a nice clean cut of wall colour next to the trim.

I'm with you Khyro. I also start with the walls and end with the trim. Habit for me.
