Kitchen Counters!!!!
The counters are coming!!!
Robert will be here Thursday afternoon to install my beautiful counters. Yippie!! Happy Dance Yahoo!! Yay!

Unfortunately I have a function for work until about 9:30 Thursday evening, so I'll have to wait all day to see the counters Cries
I suspect that when I finally get home I'll be too excited to sleep, so I may be able to get photos posted before you all wake up on Friday morning Cheesy Grin

I'm so excited!

RE: Kitchen Counters!!!!
Had a little scare this evening...

RGG called, asking if we were going to have the kitchen fawcet unhooked.
When Doug the plumber guy (DPG - don't you love my acronyms?!) originally installed the fawcet, he mentioned that it was going to be difficult to unhook and that we may need to call him in.

So, here we were, 8:30 on the night before our counters are to be installed, trying to figure out what to do!! We left a message for DPG, but we suspected we wouldn't hear from him until tomorrow at the earliest. In the mean time, RGG is waiting to hear whether tomorrow is a go after all. Finally I said to DH, "do you think you can reach up there with a crescent wrench?". "Hmmm", he said (that and "MmmHmmm" are his usual responses to most things I say... he's a man of few words). He's under the sink right now.

BUT... he's managed to loosen everything and he's going to be able to get the fawcet removed for RGG! RGG just called back (he had a solution that meant installing 3/4 of the counters, waiting until next week for the part over the sink)... but I was able to tell him that it was all good here!!!

Yikes! We almost had to wait until next week for the counters!

The down side re: the fawcets... RGG says that the adhesive they use to set counters has to cure for a few days... that means we can't re-install the fawcet until Saturday at the earliest. Hopefully DPG can come in and hook everything back up, because DH can't do THAT with his handy crescent wrench!!

My DH would respond like this to your question, "MmmHmm"
I respond.... "YES, YES, YES!! They'll be here, fully installed, this afternoon!"

My DH would respond like this to your statement, "Hmmmm"
I respond... "You'll have to be patient until you log-on on Friday morning Sad"

RE: Kitchen Counters!!!!
My Son informs me that RGG and his Son are there, installing the granite counters!!

I asked him, "How do they look?"

"Good", he said casually.

Good?!!! #/S*!! wtf?!
For the money and time we've spent on these flippen counters they had better look better then "Good"!!

When I expressed my displeasure at his description he assured me that they look "very good". EEK

I take it to be a Man-Thing (my Son is 20)... they just don't get as excited about cool things like this as Women do. (okay... for the sake of drama, I'm generalizing here Cheesy Grin)

If RGG was installing a Lamborghini in the driveway I suspect "Good" wouldn't have been a word my Son would use to describe it!!

Now DH... he's matured enough over the years to recognize the need to show enthusiasm over things that excite me more then him. For example, he's texted me on my cell several times over the last few days with a count down to the new counters. In fact, I returned from my meeting this morning to the text, "Are they there yet?!"
What a sweetie!!

Typical guy reaction!!!! I'm sure "Good" in your son's language means "Awesome!!" in normal people language Wink

Don't worry, your peeps here will give your countertops the reaction they deserve!! Icon_smile Blue Thumbs Up

After a long wait...

Maybe I'm tired after a long day... maybe it's because the wall is naked without a backsplash... but I wasn't bowled over when I came in this evening. Perhaps the whole thing has just reached an anti-climatic finish and, tomorrow, I'll wake up, see the counters in natural light and love them. Right now I just like them.

AND... I'm not happy about the way RGG cut the stone around the sink. We thought it would sit on the sides of the sink just a tiny fraction, but RGG was concerned about removing/replacing the sink - he feels that leaving a smidge of space will allow for this possibility. He'll be back in a few days to caulk in this gap. I'm just not sure how it will look Sad Not sure if I should make an issue of this or just wait to see how it looks. Of course, there's likely nothing that could be done if it was wrong. I have to find faith!!!

I'm off to bed now... I'll check in tomorrow morning.

RE: Kitchen Counters!!!!
Oh, V, I'm sorry you're not more excited about the countertops Sad I think they look stunning!!! Although I have to agree that the finish around the sink is a bit strange -- I would have brought the granite right over the edges like you would do with an undermount sink.

You know what might look nice?? I don't know if this is possible, but if you could get narrow strips of a dark granite or similar material that would be flush with the countertops to cover the edges of the sink. I think that would give your beautiful sink more impact, and would solve the problem of the edges not being covered.

But really, overall, the countertops are beautiful Icon_smile I hope you're happier with them this morning Icon_smile

Morning!

Yes, I am happier with the counters this morning! Icon_smile Not over the top yet, but happy. When I got up this morning DH had all the lights off but the one from the hood-fan and I found myself very happy with the look of the counters - particularly as they relate to the floors and cabinets - really... they looked wonderful in the low light! They look pretty darn terrific in higher light, too, it's just that the combination of stone and low light created an ambience. Cheesy Grin

I guess I'm just questioning my design choice, which is silly because this stone fit perfectly into my colour plan. And I also find myself SO unsure as to what to do with the backsplash. Sad Originally I was thinking I could carry the taupe tone in the granite up the wall (do you remember the taupe subway tile I shared?)... now I'm thinking that will be too much. I'm wondering about travertine in an off-white... or perhaps a mosiac tile of some kind (but admittedly, I'm worried that would be too busy next to a stone with it's own active design).

I'd sure like some opinions here!! I've been scouring the internet over the last few weeks for inspiration photos and haven't found anything I'm crazy about! The only thing I've found myself consistently drawn to is... subway. Say wha?

Actually... this might be an idea. Perhaps with a darker, brownish stone that compliments the cabinets? Triming out the three sides of the sink... hmmm... I'll mention this to RGG. It might make him happy because it would mean that the pieces could be broken off to remove the sink without damaging the whole counter... then they could be replaced once this hypothetical new sink is reinstalled. EEK Possible... Thanks for the idea, Smoodgie!

It was a very, very long day yesterday - I wasn't home until 10:30 - and I'm still tired!
