Kate's Fireplace

Kate's Fireplace
I picked up the quote and stain sample for Kate's fireplace the other day and wanted to get some opinions...

First - here's a photo of the stain sample. The wood is fir and the stain colour is winge, an extremely dark brown.

While I think it's beautiful, I'm not 100% sure of the colour.
When I had originally suggested this idea to Kate I had imagined - and she liked the idea of - a dark gray/light black stain on the wood. While I love this stain colour I won't know until later today (when I take the sample board to Kate's place) whether a) it will work the way I want it to with the brick, and b) whether Kate will like it.

What I LOVE... the way the graining in the fir is affected by the stain... the golden lines are terrific! AND the graining will run horizontally across the wall. It's going to be fab!

Our carpenter Bob also drew a mock-up of the fireplace facade, and I've attached it...

I wanted your opinion...
Bob has placed the stainless steel strips every 16". While I definitely want the first strip to be 16" from the floor, I'm not sure I want so many strips up the wall. I had imagined them spaced about every 2.5ft, starting from the first strip that sits at the middle of the firebox. Because the surrounding wall is brick, with it's own vertical lines, I didn't want the strips to compete.
What are you thoughts on this?

Looking forward to comments!!

RE: Kate's Fireplace
So... Kate loves the colour (:yayIcon_smile and we won't make any stain changes.
Kate agreed with me about the horizontal steel strips (and so did our electrician Jason who was at K's to quote on some work) and on Monday I will ask Bob to alter the plans... we'll have the second strip up from the floor at approximately the mantle height - the distance between strip one and two (about 2.5ft) will be the spacing we use for the remaining strips. I think it'll look wonderful!

RE: Kate's Fireplace
The wood & SS combo is going to look fantastic. Can't wait to see it done!!!

This project is inspiring me to do something about our fireplace -- I'd love to remove all the trim and re-face it in either SS or copper.

People that think they know everything seriously annoy those of us that actually do.

Hey Smoodgie... why not start a thread on your fireplace. I'd love to see some of your ideas and, if it helps, share some thoughts and make some suggestions (if I have any!). Cheesy Grin
