Fireplace idea
V's plans for Kate's fireplace have inspired me to change up our fireplace. I've never liked it much -- although the white mantel is way better than the original pinky oak mantel Barf We just painted it, as well as the trim around the two windows.

So one idea I have is to just remove the trim pieces and clad the whole thing in copper sheeting. Probably with a simple wood top painted dark brown. Not sure what to do with the tiles -- I really don't like them. What could I replace them with?? I used a picture of copper sheeting to copy and paste copper onto the fireplace, but it came out looking more like wood -- which is actually a nice look Icon_smile

Feel free to make suggestions. And of course, mock-ups would be super-helpful!!

I guess I should mention that the FP project will have to be relatively inexpensive and easy to do Embarrassed

I have an idea Icon_smile
But I'm horrible at mock-ups so you'll have to read my idea and then use your imagination Cheesy Grin

Take a look at these tiles:

The first three are actual copper and the last one is (I believe) a glass.
My favourite of these... the first one! Gorgeous!! Thumbs Up
But the copper class would also be stunning and would had some sparkle!

I suggest that you remove the marble-looking stuff on the face of your fireplace and on the hearth (top and sides)... re-face both the front (around the box) and the top of the hearth with a beautiful copper tile. Clad the sides of the hearth with a paintable mdf and, perhaps a corner trim that will hide the sides of the tiles on the top (hope this makes sense!)... then paint the mantle and hearth sides in a dark colour... maybe the Black Bean Soup you're considering for your doors.

What do you think?
Personally... I think it would look FAB, and relatively inexpensive. The copper tiles won't be cheap, but you wouldn't need much (i.e., sq.ft) to do the job. Including supplies, I think you could do this kind of a make over for a few hundred dollars ($350 max).

RE: Fireplace idea
Just something I found as I was searching out copper tiles on line.

If you were here I'd take you to a few tiles stores to search them out... or we'd head to my own personal tile guy (Ron) with a photo and ask him where to get it.

It might take some searching, but it can be found.

Why not check out a few tile stores in your city? You could consider looking at HD - I know that they display irridescent glass tiles - maybe they have something like this? I also believe I've seen copper tiles on display.

Do you think you could do a mock up showing your mantle and hearth sides in a dark colour with a copper-type colour on the hearth top and around your firebox?

RE: Fireplace idea
i think it's a good idea to change colour of the fireplace mantel - too much white there, also i think flat screen tv and narrow shelves/nice tv stand would look great on tv-wall. i would change the colour of sofa to more lighter.
anyway, did you hear about my b-day recently (of course you did LOL), so i 've got a present bamboo fun and this is my first try. i don't know if you like it but i sure had fun!Doh

RE: Fireplace idea
Thanks for the mock-up, Mrs. Fancy Icon_smile That's actually an older picture of our FR -- we do have a wall mounted TV with a low cabinet under it now Icon_smile We still have the same sofa with a few red & brown cushions, and a copper painting above it.

What's the name of the program you used to do the mock-up?? I bet it was fun!!

I really like the dark mantel. I agree, the white fireplace is too much white in the room.

What do you think of this mock-up using V's suggestion of copper tiles with the dark mantel??

You know what I think of the this look Razz Thumbs Up

One thing, Smoo... pull the dark mantle colour to the sides of the hearth... I was envisioning only the hearth top to have tile. I'm thinking wraping the sides of the hearth with the same dark colour will help to ground the fireplace against the red wall.

RE: Fireplace idea
so you did well with tv-wall (according to my suggestions Big Grin).
the copper surround the way you showed - way too much. although if it would be just on the sides and top part - it would look interesting. but how you are going to finish the bottom part then? to cover marble with wood to match the mantle?

p.s.
<What's the name of the program you used to do the mock-up?? I bet it was fun!!>
i used photoshop and new pen on the tablet. since i didn't draw for a long time and the pen was a new thing for me, it was a bit more struggle than fun. so i'll practice more (maybe i should do a mock-up for myself?).

Oh, tablets are cool!! I borrowed a co-worker's for a week once. It takes a while to get used to it, but it's a lot of fun Icon_smile
