RE: Countdown on... to a new kitchen!
Can you send Brad & Shelley here for a few weeks?? Wink

Yep, you won't know how all the lights will look until the kitchen is complete and the lights are installed. I'm sure they'll look great together -- you've got a real definite look you're going for, and you obviously know what you're doing. Don't second-guess yourself Icon_smile

Thanks for the pep-talk, Smoodgie! Icon_smile

As good as Brad is, and as much as he likes to help, he's asked me to get a drywall crew in here for our next project LOL So... I don't think I could convince he and Shelley to fly back east to help you out Razz

RE: Countdown on... to a new kitchen!
Hubby called me (I'm at work)... cabinet installer guy showed up this morning without his helper. Helper is sick and cabinet guy isn't feeling too hot either. Says he'll do what he can today on his own. Sad He's hoping his helper is feeling better tomorrow. I shouldn't be too sad because work is getting done, but I was hoping that LOTS of work would get done! Regardless, I can't wait to come in this evening to see how things are looking. I'll post a pic or two this evening Cheesy Grin

RE: Countdown on... to a new kitchen!
Well... Sam the install guy (SIG) didn't get very far on his own without his helper... because he wasn't feeling well either, he left a little early... AND he left early because he/we encountered a problem (more on that a bit further down) that he needs to think about/problem solve.

Okay... here's a pic of the upper cabinets above where the stove will go... obviously crown moulding comes last.

I'm really loving it so far, particularly the glass doors! I purchased glass knobs for these two doors and brushed nickle handles for all the rest of the doors... what do you think about having these two different?

Anyway... I'm AM disappointed that more wasn't finished today Sad

So the problem I was mentioning... take a look at this corner cabinet:

Unfortunately this cabinet came slightly damaged.
SIG feels he could fix it, but he would have to order some veneer - and that would take a few weeks to get in.
BUT... when SIG measured our original kitchen, the kitchen was smaller because of the plaster/lathe compared to the 1/2" drywall we now have. We asked him at the time to try and determine how large this cubby space would be because we wanted this particular corner cabinet to be a few inches wider. At the time he wouldn't commit to the wider cabinet... so we didn't order it. It turns out that we DO have the space. So... we've decided to return the cabinet you're looking at for one that's a bigger one. Another BUT... it'll take 4 weeks for delivery!

Regardless of which options we chose, SIG can't install the uppers in this area. We either wait his 2 weeks or our 4 weeks.

Finally... if he can't intall the uppers, he's reluctant to install the lowers (in this corner only). We've asked him to place (i.e., not secure) the lowers as accurately as possible because we want to get our countertops ordered (and they take 4 weeks, too).

So... that's what he's thinking about/problem solving.

I'm a little sad. Cries

I'm hoping he'll place the lowers 'cause I don't want to wait 8 weeks for my counters!

Okay... enough of that. If you're interested, I'll post more pics tomorrow evening 'cause he'll have installed more cabinets (likely all the lowers by the stove and the cabinets around the fridge).

Chat with you then...
Vickie

RE: Countdown on... to a new kitchen!
Sorry to hear that SIG didn't get more done yesterday. But what he did do looks great!! Clap

I think you should wait the four weeks and get the wider cabinet. You're putting all this work and money and effort into custom-designing your kitchen, it would be a shame to not do it exactly the way you want. I know waiting is tough -- but the final results will be worth it!!!

I think the glass knobs will look fine combined with the brushed metal handles. But at least if you do it and then decide you don't like how it looks, it's an easy fix Icon_smile Are you sure you want handles on your doors?? We have handles on ours, and I'd much rather have knobs. Actually, I like the look of knobs on the doors and handles on the drawers. Of course, that's just my personal opinion Embarrassed

For sure we're interested in seeing more pictures!! Keep 'em coming!!! Yay!

That's exactly how we feel...
It turns out that if we chose to have SIG repair this cabinet he can actually install things right away and fix it later... but the problem is that because the space is a little larger, he'd have to put an almost 4" filler at the left (against the other wall). First of all, he doesn't have a 4" filler... second of all... yuck!! That's why we're taking advantage of this damaged cabinet to send it back and get a larger one... smaller filler! Icon_smile These are supposed to be custom fitted cabinets... smaller will look more custom... larger filler will look like we messed up!!

smoodgie Wrote:Are you sure you want handles on your doors??

No!!! Originally I wanted these glass knobs on all the cupboards with handles on the drawers... just like you Wink
I like the idea of matching the door handles in our home (they're glass) AND I like the idea of capturing "age" by using them. Anyway... rather then search out ones that I like, I opted for what was easy. Then I took a trip to Lee Valley and saw the knobs! I picked up two, thinking that at least I could get glass knobs on my special cabinets. Now that I have some cupboards hung, I've held the two handles up and REALLY prefer the glass knobs. I think I'm going to have hubby tell SIG today to only drill one whole in all the cupboards so that IF I chose to go with knobs, I can... if he drills two wholes, I'm committed to handles!

Okay... off to work... but I'd rather be here watching SIG and the install! Sad

Good call on the corner cabinet Icon_smile It means more waiting, but you'll be so much happier with the results Icon_smile

Also good call on the holes for the knobs/handles. Once you go with two holes for handles, there's no turning back!! Well, OK, there IS, but it isn't easy!! If you really like the glass knobs, then go for it!! This is your custom kitchen, give it all the little special touches that you want Icon_smile

Can you post a pic of the Lee Valley glass knob??

Sure... I'll do that later today when I get home from work Icon_smile

Turns out that SIG is not well today so has called in sick. That means no cabinet install progress today Cries

Some good news... he says he can temporarily place the cabinet in the infamous corner... which means we can order our granite! Cheesy Grin We'll have our guy come in for the final measure on Friday.

Have a great day!
