I think the "rule" is to lay the floor so that the ends of the planks point towards the window. Does that make sense??

No, they're good!! I like how they're subtle Can you talk hubby into painting the chair rail the same colour as the bottom of the walls?? I think that would make the room feel bigger, because the white strip kind of splits the room in half.

Yes, but it's all the same color......... The stripes are created solely with glaze.

We got stuck with the chair rail as a little 'gift' from the mill-workers when we had the house built. DH was afraid to rip them down when he painted in case he wrecked the walls.......

Even better!! Then the chair rail will be even less noticeable!! If you don't like it, that's a good way to hide it.
